Margate 1 Lowestoft Town 4
A report by my mate Terry:
Reynolds, cave-brown, crane, gaughran, smith, guentchev (forbes 83 mins), mitchell, fisk, henderson (francis 74 mins), nolan, frew (forshaw 78 mins). Subs; okay, forshaw, francis, forbes, ainsley
Arrived in Margate to some earlier showers but by kick-off it had passed and was a sunny and very hot day.
Margate were playing in blue and white hoops, so Lowestoft took to the field in their all red strip.
It was a positive start from Lowestoft, looking for a way through but Margate were also looking to get a foothold and created the first chance of the match when the pacey number 11 broke through and hit a rising shot just wide of the post. The game was starting to take the same shape as Tuesday with Lowestoft looking a bit docile, as the number 11 got in again but a poor effort was palmed over by reynolds.
Margate then found some space in midfield with reynolds off his line but the lob floated over reynolds and over the open goal. The signs were looking ominous, as Margate were pushing Lowestoft back now and creating chances.
Much like Tuesday though, Lowestoft then started to settle with Henderson finding guentchev on the right and his squared ball being put just put behind for a corner. However Margate reminded Lowestoft that they were a threat, as cave-brown got sucked into the edge of the box during a Lowestoft attack and as a result the number 11 broke and crossed, only for the resulting header to go just wide of the goal.
Cave-brown then got caught again when he didn't win a header and with the play breaking to the right, smith was outpaced by the Margate number 7, who produced a great finish in the far corner of the net to put Margate into a 1-0 lead (22 mins).
This appeared to be the kick in the bottom that Lowestoft required, as Frew and Lowestoft started to give the Margate defence some problems. Frew was put in on goal but a poor lobbed effort to beat the keeper saw the chance wasted. Frew kept plugging away though and at times was going out to the right to win the ball and force some pressure.
It really was an action packed first 25 mins but you started to get the feeling that Lowestoft were now finding their feet.
Frew shot from the edge of the area, with the keeper fumbling it onto the post.
Lowestoft then made their turn of foot count, as cave-brown delivered a lovely ball into the box, with frew floating a header over the keeper for 1-1 (32 mins).
Henderson then got on the end of a pass but his shot went just over the bar.
Lowestoft were really starting to show the levels of football we know they can produce, with some better passing across the deck and some quick inter passing.
The pacey number 11 was still a threat for the Lowestoft defence but Lowestoft now seemed more comfortable.
The half ended with a dipping effort from guentchev just going over the bar.
The second half saw Lowestoft coming out and playing with real intent and a lovely spell of football ended with cave-brown finding henderson, who's touch just bobbled in past the post to put Lowestoft into a 2-1 lead (49 mins).
You got the impression at that point that Lowestoft knew they had hit their stride and Margate were there for the taking.
A guentchev shot inside the box was just tipped over and then a lovely spin from frew inside the box was finished with his shot hitting the base of the post.
Henderson and frew's selections were certainly staring to look justified, as both were now causing the Margate team issues.
Margate were trying to force the play but lowestoft were playing with strength.
A period of about 10 minutes then passed with both sides sparring in midfield but lowestoft then got a hold of the game again.
A ball up in the air fell to guentchev inside the area, with a lovely placed bending volley going past the keeper to give Lowestoft a 3-1 lead (66 mins).
Chances were then coming thick and fast with henderson breaking through from the left, with his chance being put behind for a corner.
Francis then replaced the impressive henderson (74 mins).
Guentchev was starting to pull all his tricks out of the bag and was running Margate ragged. Lowestoft were in total control and any forward advances by Margate were snuffled out by crane and gaughran at the back.
Forshaw replaced frew on 78 mins and forbes replaced guentchev on 83 but sandwiched in between these changes was Lowestoft's fourth and final goal. Guenthev dinked a cross to the far post for forshaw to slot home for 4-1 (83 mins).
The frustration was now evident for the Margate players and fans in a half that Lowestoft had controlled without any real challenge.
Lowestoft nearly snatched a fifth with a francis cross from the left finding nolan, who header over the bar. However the final whistle came (not soon enough for Margate) and Lowestoft ran out very worth 4-1 winners.
With the exception of the first 20 mins Lowestoft played well as a team and at time their flowing moves and passing left Margate for dead.
Man of the match was hard to call with stand out performances from frew, guentchev and Henderson. Frew was always finding great space and henderson ran at the Margate defence to give them a tiresome day. However for me guentchev was my man of the match, with a well taken volleyed goal and heavily involved in Lowestoft's dominant 2nd half showing.
A happy trip back from Margate!
