I was wondering if anyone on the site has any suggestions towards any good Dutch films they have seen?

Im really into european films at the moment, in the past few weeks ive seen a German film called 'The Wave', and last night i saw this Romanian film in which these two university girls try and get an abortion, , which is/was illegal over there.

I dont know what state the film industry over in Holland is. Most people over in the UK think it is just adult films made over your end, but i find that very hard to believe.

P.S. english subtitles would be needed
cheers
Rinus

Haha, adult-films.
Well, Holland has recently made a movie which is called ''Zwartboek'', or ''Blackbook''. Next to this picture I can recommend ''Simon'' and ''Soldaat van Oranje''.

The best, by far. We all love Dries. Dries is our national hero. Nah, just kidding. Go with what the others have said and maybe take a look at Paul Verhoeven's filmography. Most of his films are released abroad and should be available with subtitles.

I've also seen The Wave. Maybe not the best movie out there, but quite impressive considering it's based on a true experiment. Another German experiment is this one. Haven't seen it myself though, it's still on my to see-list.

Got any UK-tips for us?

You realise you just linked us to a Chech website right?

I found this one quite impressive in the day and it could be worth a watch. Take a close eye to Tigo's acting, the way he shows the characters pain and anger, just with one look, is very impressive and something you don't see in dutch cinematics that often.

Thanks for all the replies, ill definatly give them a watch!

Yes the wave wasnt the best film in terms of acting and story, but the fact it was based on a real life event makes up for it.

I wouldnt really know where to start with UK films, its also hard to find great 'new' UK films as many are almost merged with the US as its where all the funding comes from. Im interested as to what UK films you are shown over in Holland. Do you get a lot of our films or is it rare to find a UK film being shown?

thanks again!

Oh no, you didnt enjoy Green Street did you? The film was about one of the biggest rivalries in english football; Millwall (my club) and West Ham (the 'Vermin')!!!

Totally missed the mark when trying to show what actually happened in those days, was A LOT more violent than that and the bias towards West Ham was just crazy! Let me tell you Millwall had the best firm in england, end of!

As for good english films, you would need to be able to understand verbal english, but This Is England is a classic british film: http://tvshack.cc/movies/This_Is_England__2006_/a:96393/

This is an online version of the film, but if you can get the DVD its well worth it. Also they have recently made a TV Series as a follow on from the film, its not currently available to watch online, but if you like the film as much as i do i STRONGLY recommend buying the DVD which i believe you can buy here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/This-England-DVD-Thomas-Turgoose/dp/B003PJ6W7I/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1289514701&sr=1-1

I wouldnt know where to start in terms of whether you can get it delivered to holland or whether you can buy it where you live, but its definatly worth the effort!

Also did the Sci-Fi films, 'Aliens', ever get shown in the Netherlands, not english made, but one of my favourite ever movies!

Yes, but not so much for Robocop, i wasnt too much of a fan. I know him mainly for the first 'Starship Troopers' and for 'Basic Instinct' (but not for the actual film ).

Finally someone who agrees with me. For different reasons, since I'm not really familiair with the whole firm thing. Besides the violence, which isn't even that rough, it's overdramatized, sobby coming-of-age crap of a nerdy guy who toughens up. With an actor who tried to shake down his reputation as a hobbit. Hated it.

I've seen This Is England. Little Turgoose is brilliant. Also have Dead Man's Shoes in my collection. Definately want to see some more of Shane Meadows. Also liked London to Brighton. Gritty movie, as I remember it. And I should mention Eden Lake. As for directors, Danny Boyle and Neil Marshall are interesting.

Couple of other titles that come to mind are Harry Brown, 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, Severance, Red Road, Rise of the Footsoldier, In Bruges, Cashback, The Children, The Escapist, Hunger and The Bank Job. And I still didn't see Looking For Eric. Just to give you an idea, because I'm probably forgetting some names and titles.

This +1

Shane is one of the best up-and-coming directors in the UK, if not the best! If you want to find out about all his films this is where to go:
http://shanemeadows.proboards.com/index.cgi
Just look under the 'films' section and you will find all of his stuff. If you need help finding the actual videos then you will need to register and ask someone on the forum.

Have you seen the new This is england TV series? Just aired a few months back on Channel 4, and even better than the film!

I've seen This is England, was quite good actually. It's better than Romper Stomper in my eyes, but still can't match American History X in the same genre.
