[list">Liverpool move fast to sign Raul Meireles from Porto for £10.7m
Liverpool have moved quickly to replace Javier Mascherano by agreeing a £10.7m package with Porto tonight for the Portugal international Raul Meireles.
Meireles, one of Portugal's more impressive players at the World Cup, is understood to have agreed personal terms and, if everything goes to plan, the deal will be completed over the weekend, dependent on the 27-year-old passing a medical examination.
The transfer was rushed through this evening after Mascherano finally got his wish to leave Anfield, joining Barcelona in a £20m deal that freed up the money for Liverpool to bring in a cheaper replacement.
Meireles is available for a low fee because he only has two years of his contract left and Porto have been trying to sell him rather than risk losing him on a free transfer in the future.
The player has been prominently linked with Manchester United over the past month but does not fit into the club's policy under the Glazer family of not signing players for big money if they are aged 26 or above, Dimitar Berbatov being the exception to the rule.
Liverpool do not operate with such restrictions and the manager Roy Hodgson will hope Meireles can make his debut in the league game at Birmingham City on 12 September.

Liverpool needs to buy better players than Raul Meireles if they want to buy there way back to the top of the Premier League. I think they made a mistake when the let Aquilani move to Juventus. His first season at Liverpool was because of injuries and form loss nothing less than a disaster but he still is a quality football player and someone who can help Liverpool back to the top.
With Joe Cole Liverpool gained a technically superb player but the loss of Macherano will be crucial if they don't buy a good replacement.
I know many people will disagree with me but I think that Arsenal and Tottenham will be biggest competitors of Chelsea en Manchester United and that Manchester City and Liverpool will disappoint this season.

I dont think Chelsea will disappoint this season, i see them like this season before as Champions of 2010/2011... I think if the players make it true at Man. City, i see them end up at the first 3:
1. Chelsea
2/3.Man Utd/Man City
4.Arsenal
I dont thin Man Utd is going to be Champion this season they're not playing excellent ( seen the draw against Fulham ), but i wouldn't say that Arsenal is going to play very bad, but i'm not seeing them end up as a Champion... It's complicated, who is gonna be the Champion or not... They have good teams.

Have you seen them play against Chelsea, if they reach each game that level they will be titel favorites.
Why do you think City will end so high? They have good players but there tactics are absolutely ridiculous. They play with 3 defensive midfielders and because of that will have a problem reaching there strikers. Against Tottenham they where outclassed and the 3-0 against Liverpool doesn't say much since Liverpool was also outclased by Arsenal but Arsenal had just a huge amount of bad luck that game.
I'm born and raised as a Chelsea fan and live very close to Stamford Bridge so hope Chelsea will win the Premier League but I think Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur also have the team to end the season as champion.

Maybe you are right, just a little bit.
Have you seen the game of Tottenham today ? Against Wigan, it was a 0-1 lose, how did they play ?

I haven't seen it, I'm back in Amsterdam (because of the Dinamo game) and my My.Sky (like UPC on the internet) didn't work. Luckily I record all the Premier League football games automatically so I'll be able to see the mach when I'm back in London on tuesday.

Liverpool made a mistake in signing Alberto, he is not suited to the fast paced style of the premier league. He is a slow skillful player who likes to take his time to pick out a great pass. He has been awful everytime he played for Liverpool and they will make a huge loss when they sell him. I believe they made the right decision to sell him back to Italy.
Man City will fail again this year and i hope they finally realise that they cannot instantly buy the title. They needed to keep their good english core and add a 'few' expensive foriegn players. Instead they now have a whole team of individuals who do not know how to play with each other.
It shows that after their first few games their best midfielder has been De Jong, not all of the other multi-million pound players they have just signed. Tottenham are building a great team and VDV will only make it better. My prediction for the league this year is:
1. Manchester United
2. Chelsea
3. Tottenham
4. Arsenal
Also, i hope you dont live in england as you have spelt 'London' wrong, its a bit of a disgrace...

The singing of Rafael van der Vaart will make Tottenham a lot stronger. Together with Modric he can direct the play and I think that Tottenham will have the strongest midfield of the Premier League. Lennon, Modric, Huddlestone, V.d. Vaart and Bale together on one midfield would be amazing but than Tottenham would have to change their formation to one with a single striker.
Tottenham's squad is still young and inexperienced but if they can hang on to the players they have now they will be one of the main titel candidates in the near future.
Starting line up Gomes; Corluka, Dawson, King, Assou-Ekotto; Lennon, Modric, Huddlestone, V.d. Vaart, Bale; Defoe
This would be an amazing line up for any Premier League titel candidate.
Citaat: Also, i hope you dont live in england as you have spelt 'London' wrong, its a bit of a disgrace...
Where did I do that? If you mean in my profile you'll have to understand that Londen is the Dutch spelling of London and since we are on a Dutch site it makes sense to spell it in Dutch accept here where we speak English of course.

Yes they do have a great midfield, i dont think Modric will start every game, and between him and Krancjar (spelling) i think they have very good depth. They will be alright at striker, they have Crouch, Defoe, Keane and the russian!
I disagree slightly in that i think they are contenders now. Chelsea and Machester united both have older players who want continue at their current levels of performance for long, i believe they could push for a 3rd place finish this year.
Really i would have thought it was the same spelling. We dont spell any dutch cities any differently...

As Rafael van der Vaart was born in the same town where I live (Heemskerk) I always take a closer look at his career.
I hope and expect he will do fine at Tottenham, although I do not know if his arrival in London means that the Spurs will be contenders. The way they dispatched Young Boys in qualifying for the Champions League suggests that they are a quality side. But they have to follow up that kind of performance in the PL, otherwise they will not finish on an automatic CL-spot. Against Wigan that did not happen. So...
Still, they might slug it out with Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Liverpool.
Arsenal can play breathtakingly beautiful, but are also inconsistent. Lack of a decent goalkeeper who wins them points could cost them.
Liverpool was fairly optimistic in the run-up to the season that after 21 years they could finally end top. But being emphatically defeated by a rival (Man City - Liverpool 3-0) is not a good sign. Already there are five points to be made up towards the top. Could be a too tall mountain to climb.
Man City should do well. Still, you can only be considered a real contender if you manage to prevent a defeat when you have a bad day at the office. So losing against Sunderland was not a proper result. A Premier League title? Come back next year, but qualifying for the Champions League might be a realistic ambition.
As for the traditional title contenders, I believe Chelsea will have the edge over Man Utd, though I have to admit it is just a gut feeling.
All in all, I would expect that at the end of the Premier League the table will look like this:
1. Chelsea, 2. Man United, 3. Man City, 4. Arsenal, 5. Tottenham 6. Liverpool
Don’t take my word for it though. The last time I predicted six out of six was erm... never mind.

You think Arsenal and City will end above Tottenham? Why? Tottenham's squad has way more quality players than Arsenal's and in the City team there is no balance, they play with 3 defensive midfielders.
If Modric finds the form he had before his injury he's one of the best midfielders in de Premier League, just as V.d. Vaart. Arsenal is just Fabregas, Van Persie and some games Arshavin and Tottenham has more quality players like Modric, V.d. Vaart, Bale (best player on their side the last couple of matches), Defoe, King (if fit), Corluka and Gomes.
1. Chelsea
2. ManU
3. Tottenham
4. Arsenal
5. City
6. Liverpool

Thats great UK. Even more great is that V.d Vaart is gonna serve them . He's the king in assists and has a great 2nd line shot!.
And City will fail miserable again. Adebayor is being annoyed again ;)

Nobody expected Liverpool to challenge this year over here in england (maybe some liverpool fans). They are the ultimate underachievers, and in a more cash rich way, they are the Feyenoord of UK football!
Arsenal spend no money anymore and wont be title contenders unless they manage to fluke their way to victory. Their only hope is that Van Persie is fit all season (which isnt likely). Almunia is terrible and the fact they failed to sign any goalie means they will never be solid at the back!
Chelsea's problem is nearly all of their squad is very old, and they rely heavily on the goals of Drogba. Dont assume Malouda is on some goalscoring form, he is one of the worst technical players ive ever seen, but his positional sense is immense. Every goal he scores is just because he is in the right place, and he taps the ball home.
Manchester should win the title this year as they have the most all-round squad, and if Scholes and Giggs continue to produce then they should be able to start a run of wins going before the new year.
Man city continue to spend big, but they buy players for their name rather than whether they fit well in the squad. They wont concede many this year because of Kompany and De Jong who is on fire, but i cannot see them scoring many unless Tevez hits unbelievable form.

Like I said, it was just a gut feeling. And you must believe me when I say that I hope I am wrong. I fancy Tottenham and Arsenal more than the other four teams mentioned.
But in a long, hard season, you are bound to experience a dip in form. It isn’t possible to play great, dashing football for 38 weeks, also bearing in mind that next to the Premier League, clubs will have to play Champions or Europa League, FA Cup, League cup, while their players will at some point have to represent their respective countries. That means 50+ games a year.
Playing great football the whole season is therefore not a possibility. You need to be able to grind out results, play ugly or bad and still win. I think Manchester City can do that, I doubt whether Arsenal or Tottenham have that ability.

Tottenham hasn't had the luckiest beginning of the season, both Defoe als Dawson will be out for around two months. Since Tottenham has Gallas and Keane as back-ups this doesn't have to be disastrous for them but it's never fun for a manager to miss two of his best players for a long time.

Just saw Birmingham play against Liverpool and they made a great impression on me. In the first half they outplayed Liverpool and should have scored at least two goals. The match ended in a 0-0 draw but Liverpool should count its blessings cos they where very lucky Birmingham didn't score one of their many chances.

Ajax should really look at Chelsea for inspiration, the main reason that Chelsea is playing so well is that they are tactically impeccable. They play in a similar formation with the same sort of players on the midfield as Ajax: a defensive midfielder (Mikel/Enoh), a box-to-box (Essien/De Zeeuw) player and an attacking midfielder (Lampard/De Jong). Now I know that the players of Chelsea are from another class but Jol has to able to make sure that the Ajax players find themself on right position on the pitch like the players of Chelsea. The reason the Chelsea players can find each other so easily is because of their positioning and not because of their technical abilities.

I want to ask everyone on this forum to start watching Chelsea games since I truly believe they play the football Ajax should be playing and play a more attractive game than even Barcelona and Arsenal. I think that the hand of Hiddink is clearly visible in Ancelotti's squad. Tactically Chelsea's game is impeccable, the distances between the players are perfect and because that they are able to find each-other without having the technical and creative abilities that the Barcelona and Arsenal midfielders have. Chelsea even plays with a fair amount of players behind the ball but because of that they are able to structure their attacks as a well oiled machine.
I wish Ajax had a trainer or assistant-trainer that had the tactical knowledge to make our beautiful club play this sort of football. I believe that we have the players but Jol is a tactical ignoramus. He's is a great people-manager but that alone is not enough. That is why I hope Ajax will replace him in the near future with a trainer worthy of Ajax.
I hope Ajax wins the Eredivisie this season but I won't watch many matches since I don't want to see my club play the football they do now. I just hope that Jol leaves asap and that next season Ajax play's another style of football and with more youngsters cos they have the potential players als De Zeeuw, Enoh and De Jong don't have. Players like the now injured Lodeiro and the youngsters Jozefzoon, Bonevacia and Eriksen will have to play more than now so that Ajax will be Ajax again in the near future.

I have been watching many games of Tottenham lately and I think that after Chelsea they play the nicest football to watch in the Premier League. At the moment they are 1-0 down against Bolton but the speed in which they can pass the ball around is amazing. Players like Modric and V.d. Vaart are a joy to watch and the runs of Bale and Lennon make sure the playing field is kept as wide as possible and provide the crosses into the box.
It is wonderful to see that English teams like Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham have chosen the more technical and creative style of football over the normal English physical game. And it is clear that they where right cos look at ManU where the midfielders clearly don't have the same creativity and because of that the whole team now relies upon rare moments of genius of now mostly Hernandez and Berbatov.

[list">Sir Alex Ferguson handed five-match ban for outburst
A Football Association tribunal has given Sir Alex Ferguson a five-match touchline ban for his comments about referee Martin Atkinson.
The Manchester United manager was found guilty of improper conduct for saying Atkinson was biased against his side in the loss at Chelsea earlier this month.
"You want a fair referee, or a strong referee anyway - and we didn't get that," Ferguson told MUTV.
The ban starts on 22 March and includes the FA Cup tie against Manchester City.

An Interesting turn of events in the race for the Premiership this weekend. Manchester United win 4-2 at West Ham after losing 2-0 at half time. Chelsea draw 1-1 at stoke and Arsenal draw 0-0 at home to Blackburn.
An interesting half time substitution who replaced Evra at left back with Ryan Giggs, 2-0 down and the rest is history, dare I say the 19th title is heading home to Old Trafford
