Ajax Cape Town is a South African football (soccer) team based in Parow, Cape Town that participates in the Premier Soccer League. Home games are usually played at Athlone Stadium, having moved from Newlands Rugby Stadium at the end of the 2004/2005 season. They plan to move to the Philippi Stadium in the near future.

Ajax CT was formed in 1999, via the amalgation of two Cape Town-based teams, Seven Stars and Cape Town Spurs, as AFC Ajax expanded their worldwide talent-feeder network to South Africa.

The Ajax CT project had limited success in the seasons leading up to 2006/2007, the club winning a solitary title - the Rothmans Cup in 2000 - with Steven Pienaar being one of the few talents to make the grade for a move to Amsterdam, back in 2002. However, in 2006/2007, under the guidance of new coach Muhsin Ertuğral, Ajax CT claimed fourth place in the PSL and won the ABSA Cup - beating league champions Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 in the final.

Gordon Igesund, South Africa's most successful club coach [1"> who won league titles with Manning Rangers, Orlando Pirates, Santos and Sundowns, coached the club from 2002 until 2006.

In January 2007, Ajax CT managed to beat their mother club AFC Ajax 3-1 in a friendly game held in Cape Town.

After the departure of Muhsin Ertuğral at the end of the 2006/2007 season and in line with the club's development philosophy, the appointment of Craig Rosslee as the new head coach was announced.

Ajax Cape Town European Tour update

Club soccer is slowly returning to normal at Ajax Cape Town.

The Ajax youth teams are back in local action after all their recent tour to top European Tournaments.

The Ajax U20 team finished the Copa Amsterdam in 6th place after being grouped with Juventus, Ajax Amsterdam and eventual champions, Cruzerio. They held their own in the group stages with their game against Cruzerio billed as the Game of the Tournament.

Daylon Claasen scored a stunning goal against Cruzerio in the first half, however the Brazilians rallied well in the second half and equalized late in the game. Ajax Cape Town drew all three games in the group stages. Cruzerio beat Ajax Amsterdam 1-0 in the finals.

The Ajax Cape Town U19 side participated in the Groenewegen Tournament in the Netherlands and against top sides from England, Turkey, Belgium, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands and the Japanese U19 National team.

Ajax Cape Town got off to a good start holding the powerful Willem II side to a 2-2 draw, beat Nottingham Forest (2-1), FC Uitgeest (3-0) in the first round of the competition. Ajax Cape Town progressed to the winners round and played Benfica in their first game. Unfortunately the Urban Warriors lost 2-0. Ajax Cape Town played their Dutch counterparts Ajax Amsterdam in their next game a won 4-0.

In their last game of the winners section Ajax Cape Town held their own against the Japanese U19 National side that squeezed into the semi finals with a narrow 2-1 win.

Benfica won the Tournament beating Vitesse F.C. 2-1 in the final. The tournament top scorer prize was awarded to Taurig Brander of Ajax Cape Town.

The Urban Warriors U15 team left on Tuesday 27 May 2008 for the Marveld Tournament in the Netherlands (30 May – 1 June 200.

Teams that participated are Manchester United, Real Madrid, Olympic Marseille, FC Twente, PSV Eidhoven, Anderlecht, Manchester City, SV Grol, F. C. Rotterdam, Hertha Berlin and Ajax Amsterdam.

The U15’s finished the tournament with a mixed bag of results that saw them finish in 11th place one better that the mighty Manchester United side.

The Ajax Cape Town U13 team fought off a strong challenge from FC Nantes to win the Mondial Pupilles de Plomelin Tournament in France.

They beat Nantes FC (France) 8-7 on penalties in the final.The Ajax Cape Town U13 team beat off a host of international teams to land this prestigious title.

Riyaad Norodien won the Top Goal-scorers prize and Ajax walked away with prizes for the Team of the Tournament and the Group Stage Winners Trophy.John Rowley the Head of the Ajax Cape Town Youth Academy said, “It was a wonderful performance from a talented team, they conceded only one goal but scored an incredible 30 goals a testament to the quality of this side.

The Ajax Cape Town U11 team played in the International APK Youth E-tournament on the Saturday 24 May 2008.
Amongst the teams who participated are PSV Eindhoven, Rhoda 46 and Sparta. After some stellar performances Ajax finished in second place but won the Penalty Kings section of the tournament.

Ajax CEO John Comitis said, “This is a great achievement for the club and the players. They have achieved the impossible against the top U13 teams from across the football world. What makes this win more significant is that there are a number of new players in the team as well as a new coach. All the accolades must go to the Ajax Youth Academy, the coaches and the players.

Our boys performed well and their success ensures the continuity of our success in the future.

Ngobeni plays amongst the stars

Clifford Ngobeni left for Europe last week at the invitation of Goal4Africa to play in the Goal4Africa Invitational match at the Alliance Arena, Munich, Germany.

Football Stars from across the world will be in attending this event to raise funds for the Development of Education throughout the continent of Europe.

Despite earlier reports Clifford played along-side the great Clarence Seedorf in the middle of the park, in this star studded game in honour of Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday celebrations.

Clifford held his own against the likes of Gatusso(Real Madrid) and Ballack(Chelsea).

Ngobeni played against Shaun Bartlett and Kaizer Motaung but after half time he switched jerseys and played alongside his South African brothers.

Waar blijft die Ngobeni eigenlijk? Zit die al bij AJAX I ?

Jan Pruijn - New Head of Technical Affairs

Ajax Cape Town is proud to announce the appointment of Jan Pruijn as the Head of Technical Affairs at Ikamva.

He has agreed to a two year contract that will see him at Ikamva until August 01, 2010.

John Comitis the Ajax CEO said, The minute we realised the sponsorship of MTN I did not hesitate to secure the services of Jan Pruijn. He has a vast reservoir of knowledge about the latest developments of football and his appointment at Ikamva will once again raise the bar within our structures.

There is nothing like having first world input and experience at your doorstep. Our association with Ajax Amsterdam keeps us abreast of the developments of the world game but having Jan at Ikamva will ensure that we continually develop our coaches in accordance with the latest technical and tactical global developments.

By educating our coaches we indirectly educate our players and how better to prepare them for football at a higher level.

Jan will also work with our scouts to ensure that players who come into Ikamva is of a high quality and fit the profile of an Ajax player.

Profile: Jan Pruijn

Jan holds a full coaching badge from the Royal Dutch Soccer Federation (KNVB), which allows him to coach at any professional level throughout the world. In this capacity, he travelled throughout the world to observe and work with many countries' most talented soccer players.

Jan recently served as the head of the Ajax International Youth Development.

He was responsible for the establishment and organizational structure in the “AJAX-way” for branches in South Africa, Ghana, and Belgium. He also worked with players and coaches in Japan, Urawa Reds; China, CFA, Shanghai; Spain, Real Sociedad; Portugal, FC Porto; Switzerland, FC Basel; and several teams in England.

After his semi-professional football career, he started coaching at De Treffers F.C in 1985. Since then he has coached with professional clubs N.E.C. Nijmegan, Helmond Sport, The Royal Dutch Soccer Federation (KNVB), Lebanon F.A. National Youth Team, and A.F.C Amsterdam.

Jan has a long history and experience in running soccer camps all over the United States and Japan. At one of these camps he lectured over 500 coaches from 42 different states as well as countries like Canada, France, England and the Caribbean who attended the WORLD CLASS COACHING International Coaching Seminar at the Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City in the USA.

Ajax-jeugdtrainer Maarten Stekelenburg is kandidaat om bij Ajax Cape Town hoofd jeugdopleiding te worden. De 35-jarige trainer van de B2 van Ajax verbleef de afgelopen week in Kaapstad om rond te kijken bij de jeugdopleiding van Cape Town.

Waarschijnlijk word nog deze maand bekend of Stekelenburg daadwerkelijk in Zuid Afrika aan de slag gaat. Mocht dit het geval zijn, dan verlaat hij Ajax per 1 januari 2009. De afgelopen week werden de werkzaamheden van Stekelenburg bij de B2 overgenomen door hoofd opleidingen Jan Olde Riekerink.

Drie dagen waren de Amsterdammers te gast bij Ajax Cape Town en voor Van der Aat was het de eerste keer dat hij de club, waarvan Ajax voor 51 procent eigenaar is, met eigen ogen zag. ,,Ik vond het erg indrukwekkend. Ajax Cape Town doet zoveel voor de community. Voetbal bindt, daar nog meer dan hier. Als Ajax Amsterdam kunnen we buiten de samenwerking op voetbaltechnisch gebied ook op media-, pers- en marketinggebied meer doen.”

De Ajax-directie kreeg tijdens het bezoek een goed beeld van Ajax Cape Town. Van der Aat: ,,Er was een groot jeugdtoernooi met kinderen uit de sloppenwijken. Daar deed de scouting zijn werk. Verder lieten ze hun selectie van 28 man een wedstrijd tegen elkaar spelen, zodat we konden zien hoe het niveau is en een dag later speelden alle jeugdteams tegen elkaar.”




Ajax Cape Town speelde voor de Amsterdamse delegatie onderlinge duels.
Manager technische zaken Danny Blind was uiteraard ook mee naar Kaapstad. ,,De samenwerking tussen Ajax Amsterdam en Ajax Cape Town is met name gebaseerd op de jeugdopleiding en daar kijk ik naar. Of we talenten tussen de zestien en achttien jaar voor stages naar Amsterdam kunnen halen om ze vervolgens eventueel te contracteren. Het niveau van de individuele spelers is goed. Wij hebben nu behoefte aan structuur in de jeugdopleiding en vooral meer inhoud wat betreft de trainingen. Dat is ook de reden dat we nu bekijken of we een aan Ajax gelieerd persoon in Zuid-Afrika neerzetten. Dat is altijd de wens geweest, maar Kaapstad ligt niet om de hoek, waardoor het niet altijd lukte. Maar als je een vinger aan de pols wilt houden en de ontwikkeling van de spelers op een Ajax-waardige manier wilt invullen, moet je daar iemand van Ajax neerzetten.”

De Ajacieden brachten ook een bezoek aan het stadion van Ajax Cape Town, dat straks eventueel tijdens het WK 2010 dienst zal doen als trainingsaccommodatie. Van der Aat: ,,Ajax Cape Town wil daar, en op het eigen trainingscomplex, het liefste kunstgras om zodoende betere omstandigheden te creëeren voor zowel wedstrijden als trainingen. Dat stadion wordt binnenkort uitgebreid met twee tribunes aan de korte zijden. We hebben ook het nieuwe stadion in Kaapstad gezien dat tijdens het WK plaats zal bieden aan zestigduizend man. Ajax Cape Town zal daar incidenteel in gaan spelen, want normaal gesproken komen er zo’n zesduizend mensen naar een wedstrijd, behalve bij grote duels. Dan zit het vol en die duels worden dan daar gespeeld.”

Bij Ajax leeft het gevoel dat de intensiteit van de samenwerking de laatste jaren iets is verwaterd, aldus Van der Aat. ,,En dat willen we niet. Daarom zullen we er mensen opzetten die af en toe heen en weer gaan, en we hebben de wens dat er iemand gestationeerd wordt bij de jeugdopleiding. Het is ons doel om meer Benni’s, Pienaars en Enoh’s naar Amsterdam te halen!”

Khenyeza's goal sinks Supersport

Mabhuti Khenyeza passed a late fitness test in a race against time to face Supersport United at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday, 01 November 2008. Then he capped a sterling workman-like performance to win the Man of the Match award and a goal that stunned the visitors to take Ajax Cape within three points of the PSL log leaders.



This game between last years title challengers was a frantic affair, played at high speed yet credit must go to both teams as they kept the ball on the grass with some neat passing that kept the spectators captivated from the start.

Ajax Cape Town took full advantage of their “home” status and pegged Supersport in their own half for much of the opening stanza. United, clearly content to soak up the pressure as Ricardo Katza marshalled his defence well, kept a tight reign on the Ajax attack.

Still Franklyn Cale and Sameehg Doutie enjoyed space on the wings to run at the visitors. and Rudi Isaacs had his hands full as Cale used the space afforded him to good effect firing in crossed that troubled the United defence.

Such was the competitiveness between these two that it earned the Supersport player a yellow card after only 15 minutes when Isaacs brought down Cale for the umpteenth time in the short opening period.

A number of individual battles developed all over the park. Katza vs Khenyeza, Kekana vs Shumana, Doutie vs Kannemeyer and Isaacs vs Cale ensured that the game was and entertaining affair. Despite the gritty competition, a spirit of fair play prevailed.

Ajax had the first chance to score in the opening minutes when Mabhuti Khenyeza just missed making contact with a cross from Cale. Then it was Uniteds turn on the other end when Katlego Mashego went down under a challenge from Nazeer Allie but the referee Daniel Bennet waved play on after judging the tackle to be fair.

Just as the spectators caught their collective breath, Cale forced Andre Arendse into action when he punched Franklyn Cale’s goal-bound shot to clear the danger.

Ajax counter-attacked using diagonal balls to good effect to feed their offensive players. Then Nazeer Allie found himself on the wrong end of a crunching tackle and the ensuing goalmouth frenzy resulted in Nhlanhla Shabalala’s shot flying narrowly wide of the Supersport goal.

The pace of game did not let up as both teams probed for the opening goal. The teams went into the break with score tied at 0-0.

The second half started the same as the first with Ajax probing forward. This time the Urban Warriors were rewarded when Brett delivered an accurate cross onto the head of Mabhuti Khenyeza who headed the ball wide of an outstretched Arendse to give Ajax the lead.

Gavin Hunt, the United coach, brought on Brent Carelse and Shane Poggenpoel in an attempt to break the deadlock but Sean Roberts put his body on the line to keep a clean sheet.

Ajax endured a late flurry from United with Fikru Tefera prominent in their attacks. He came closest to scoring for the visitors but Robert was outstanding in-goal for Ajax as he tipped a looping header over the cross-bar.

Roberts, Ferreira, Evans, Allie and Carelse kept the United goal attempts out of their net ensure Ajax earn all three points from this important win.
